PREVIOUS SEMESTERS

The course develops innovative design strategies for free-form structures in architecture and art, where expressive objects emerge from the interaction of individual elements. It covers the entire process from initial concept to full-scale realisation, combining physical modelling, sculptural experimentation, and advanced fabrication techniques such as adaptive membrane forming for complex geometries. A key focus is intensive model-making and the full development of a project from sketch to 1:1 construction.

Building on previous semester research, students design a buildable full-scale “folly” using innovative technologies for doubly curved panels. The emphasis is on refining a single design through to construction readiness, including structural checks, material testing, and optimisation of fabrication for customised components. The final goal is a productionready architectural prototype developed in collaboration with industry partners. Students work in specialised teams (construction, fabrication, organisation, communication), contributing to a collective project that bridges conceptual exploration and real-world implementation.

Organic shapes create an inviting playground for children and the young at heart. But also a place to rest. The lively pattern gives way to joyful use.

A veil is laid over three assembled imaginery spheres forming a hut. A shelter from the harsh environment of the desert. Burlap integrated in the panels provide an archaic and haptic immersion.

This bench in the shape of a curved hyperboloid not only encapsulates the gesture of rest during the heat of daytime but also invites to wonder during night time. Resting and shrouding converge.

A roof though being shaped like a tent provides shade through connected panels via node holders. A great hall is the result not an inside but a roofed plaza.

Mother is an experience of light and space. light shines through the hovering structure partially dulling the outside world providing safety like a womb.

Exploring the traditional windtowers of the arabian world column reinvents the experience of shade and cooling gusts of wind. A park of towers in different sizes.

Drapes seemingly formed by the wind offer a path to explore. Light shadow and colour create an atmosphere that invites both lingering and exploration.

An homage to the dunes of the desert this structure not only provides a topographical experience but also a place to gather and cool off.
